Faux Fur Coats
Is It Real Fur or Faux Fur Coats?
5 ways you tell the difference between real fur and a faux fur coat
1. Feel it. twist some of the hair fibers between your fingers. If it feels smooth and silky and rolls easily between your fingers it is most likely real fur. Faux fur coats have a tendency to feel stiff and coarse to the touch.
2. Look at it. Part the hair fibers and look at the base, pay attention to how the hair is attached to the base. Animal fur will have a dense under coat made up of tightly curled hairs through which the finer silker fur hair protrude. There is often also high variation of color in real animal fur. Faux fur coats are usually even in fiber length, color and structure.
3. Check the backing. Genuine fur backing feels like suede because it is animal skin. Fake fur backing will look like fabric or sweater.
4. Poke it with a pin. Real fur is resistant to tearing ... animal skin tends to be tougher than fabric. Faux fur coats will have fabric that can be easily penetrated because fabric is less dense than animal skin.
5. Singe it. Pull out a few hair fibers and light them on fire with a match or lighter. Natural fur will not light or hold a flame, it will simply crumble or disintegrate. Faux fur coats because it is made of petroleum or plastics, will often hold a flame like a match and meGenuine fur will smell like burnt human hair.
